The galip facility located in Kerevat, East New Britain, has undergone a remarkable transformation thanks to the dedicated efforts of nine practical students from the Vunamami Farmers Training Centre. This initiative not only revitalized the appearance of the facility but also ensured compliance with stringent food safety standards, particularly the Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points (HACCP) system, which safeguards against biological, chemical, and physical hazards during food processing.
The maintenance work included a comprehensive overhaul, encompassing tasks such as repainting the walls and installing new screen windows, among other enhancements. These improvements were essential to uphold food safety protocols and ensure the facility’s readiness for processing galip and other agricultural products.
Joseph Kadui, the Student Head Boy, expressed profound gratitude to the Institute of Rural Development Corporation (IRC) for providing the opportunity for hands-on learning. He emphasized the invaluable practical experience gained by the students, enabling them to apply theoretical knowledge acquired in the classroom to real-world scenarios. This practical exposure not only enhanced their technical skills but also deepened their understanding of agricultural processes, particularly those involving machinery used in galip processing.
The vocational students, specializing in various trades such as carpentry, joinery, plumbing, scaffolding, cookery, metal welding & fabrication, electrical, and bricklaying, hailed the project as a transformative learning experience. They recognized the significance of the practical training in preparing them for future employment opportunities and expressed gratitude to IRC for fostering a conducive learning environment.
As the project concludes, the students depart with newfound confidence and skills that will undoubtedly serve them well as they transition into formal employment. Their dedication and commitment to enhancing agricultural infrastructure underscore the pivotal role of vocational training in empowering youth and driving sustainable development in rural communities.
